Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Student Visa and a Study Permit?
A student visa (Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) simply allows you to travel to and enter Canada. A study permit is the document that allows you to legally stay and study there. When your study permit application is approved, the entry visa is usually issued at the same time.
How much money do I need to show for a Canadian study permit?
You must prove you can pay for your first year of tuition, plus travel costs, plus your living expenses. The Canadian government currently requires you to show at least $20,635 CAD for living expenses for a single student (outside of Quebec), in addition to your tuition fees.
What is a Letter of Explanation or Study Plan?
It is a critical document where you explain to the visa officer exactly why you want to study in Canada, why you chose your specific program, and how this education aligns with your future career goals back in your home country.
Can I apply for a study permit if I have a gap in my education?
Yes, education gaps are very common. However, you need to clearly explain what you were doing during that time, such as working, volunteering, or traveling, and provide supporting documents to back up your explanation.
What happens if my student visa gets refused?
Do not panic. We can request the GCMS notes (the visa officer’s internal detailed notes) to understand exactly why the application was refused. Once we know the exact reasons, we address those specific concerns and submit a much stronger new application.
